What’s the Difference Between a Taper Lock Bushing and a QD Bushing?

Compared to a taper lock bushing, the flange of the QD style doesn’t take up as much shaft space and mounts flush with the drive component (sprocket or sheave). These bushings can be mounted in standard or reverse (inboard) configurations.

The main difference between the two is that the QD style bushing has a flange around the outside diameter, while the taper lock bushing has straight sides on the OD, which is meant to mount flush. Many people refer to both types as a “taper lock” because they use tapered wedging to lock to the shaft. With its straight sides, the taper bushing uses a set screw to drive the bushing into the bore of the installed component (sheave, sprocket, etc.).

Be careful when installing these screws. The holes with threads on the bushing are for removal only. Also, be aware that the appearance of a flange outside the bushing doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a QD style. Split Taper bushing also has a flange, and the two are not interchangeable. The QD style has a split that continues through the flange.

Quick Detachable Bushings:

QD or “quick-detachable” bushings are a must-have for any power transmission enthusiast. These precision-machined gizmos are designed to meet your sprocket, sheave, and pulley needs in a big way, allowing you to replace worn-out or broken components quickly and easily without the risk of compromising performance.

Invented in the late 1970s, taper-locking flangeless bushings have become the gold standard for mounting sheaves, sprockets, and other power transmission components to shafts. These bearings provide excellent clamping force and also help maintain a narrow hub, keep sprocket loads aligned, and stabilize overhung loads.

Best suited for small or medium-sized applications, these snazzy-looking products are manufactured from superior steel and are built to last. A few of the benefits include extreme strength, a tighter fit than their standard bored-to-size counterparts and the ability to be interchanged with other brands for seamless system integration.

Installation and Removal of QD Bushings:

Standard Mounting

1. Be sure that the tapered cone surfaces on the bushing and inside of the driven product are clean and free of oil or anti-seize lubricants.

2. Slide the QD bushing on the shaft, flange the end first, then assemble the key.

3. Position the QD bushing on the shaft. Tighten the set screw over the key (hand tight) with a standard Allen wrench. Do not use excessive force.

4. Slide the large end of the sprocket or other part taper bore into position over the cone, aligning drilled bolt holes in the sprocket or other part with tapered holes into the flange of the bushing. Then assemble the pull-up bolts and lock washers.

5. Tighten pull-up bolts alternatively and evenly to the tightness indicated in the torque table below. Do not use extensions on the wrench handles. There should now be a gap between the face of the sprocket or other part hub and the flange of the QD bushing to ensure a good cone grip and press fit. Caution: this gap must not be closed.

Dismounting

1. Remove all pull-up bolts and screw them into tapped holes in the pocket or another part against the flange of the QD bushing to break the cone grip.

2. Loosen the set screw and slide the QD bushing from the shaft.

Applications of QD Bushings

QD Bushings feature a split tapered flange with the split central to the flange and taper. They are used on sprockets, sheaves, and pulleys where more clamping force is required over standard bored-to-size bushings.
